Как работает устройство сброса давления трансформатора (PRD)?

  • Transformer PRDs open when abnormal internal tank pressure reaches the designed operating point of the device.
  • Releasing pressure through the device helps reduce mechanical stress on the transformer tank during an internal abnormal event.
  • PRD in transformer applications is mainly associated with oil-immersed units.
  • Depending on design, a PRD may provide mechanical indication or an electrical alarm contact.
  • PRD operation signals abnormal pressure, but it does not identify the underlying fault.

1. Why Internal Pressure Builds Up

YSF9压力释放阀

Transformer internal pressure changes during normal service. Oil expands and contracts with load and ambient temperature, so gradual pressure variation in an oil-immersed transformer is expected. A rapid abnormal pressure rise is a different event.

Gas generation from a thermal fault, arcing, insulation breakdown or other rapid energy release can raise tank pressure quickly. A higher reading does not automatically mean a fault. Pressure must be interpreted together with operating condition and other monitoring data, as described in the мониторинг масляных трансформаторов приложение.

Состояние Possible Pressure Effect Related Indicator
Normal temperature change Gradual pressure variation Oil temperature, load
Thermal fault Gas generation may increase DGA, temperature
Electrical fault or arcing Rapid gas and pressure development may occur Protection relay, DGA, partial discharge
Insulation breakdown Sudden gas release and pressure rise are possible Protection relay, Buchholz relay, DGA

2. How a Transformer PRD Operates

2.1 Operating Sequence

A pressure relief device in a transformer stays closed during normal operation. The sequence below describes the general logic:

  • Normal condition: the PRD remains closed.
  • Abnormal internal pressure: force acts on the pressure relief mechanism.
  • Designed operating point reached: the relief mechanism opens.
  • Oil or gas pressure is released, which reduces mechanical stress on the transformer tank.
  • Pressure falls: the mechanism may reseat, depending on design.

2.2 Design Differences

Transformer PRD designs differ in construction, reset behavior and indication method. Some provide a mechanical flag, and others add an alarm contact. Opening pressure, reset behavior and discharge capacity are defined by the PRD manufacturer and the transformer design, not by a general rule.

3. PRD vs Pressure Relief Valve

Transformer pressure relief device and transformer pressure relief valve are sometimes used as near-equivalent or overlapping terms in the industry. Mechanical structure, reset method and alarm accessories can still differ, so the two should not be assumed identical. Specifications should be confirmed for the actual component.

Термин Primary Function Typical Transformer Use Possible Alarm Output
Pressure Relief Device (PRD) Opens to relieve excessive internal tank pressure Oil-immersed transformer tank Mechanical indicator or alarm contact, depending on design
Клапан сброса давления Opens at a set pressure and may reseat afterward Oil-immersed transformer tank, including distribution units Depends on valve design and accessories

4. PRD vs Buchholz Relay

PRD operation responds to excessive internal pressure. Buchholz relays detect gas accumulation and, depending on relay design, oil surge in conservator-type transformers. A Buchholz relay is not a pressure relief device.

These devices complement each other and cannot simply replace one another. A pressure sensor adds continuous data but does not relieve pressure.

Устройство Responds To Типичное местоположение Primary Function
PRD Excessive internal pressure Transformer tank, depending on design Pressure relief, with optional indication or contact
Buchholz Relay Gas accumulation and/or oil surge, depending on design Pipe between tank and conservator Alarm or trip signal to the protection relay circuit
Pressure Sensor Measured internal pressure Transformer tank or oil-system fitting Continuous pressure data or alarm output

5. Pressure Monitoring and Alarm Signals

A mechanical PRD provides emergency pressure relief. Online transformer pressure monitoring provides continuous pressure data or alarm information. The two functions are different, and one does not replace the other.

Continuous transformer condition monitoring can combine several inputs:

  • Oil pressure and oil level
  • Oil temperature and winding temperature
  • DGA results
  • Alarm history

INNOFZ lists an integrated Система контроля температуры, уровня и давления трансформаторного масла, model IB-YKTCF-OL/OP, for oil-immersed distribution transformers. Per its product page, it combines oil temperature, oil level, internal pressure measurement and an integrated pressure relief valve. It installs at the conventional oil level gauge position and communicates over RS485.

The same page lists a pressure measurement range of 71–181 kPa absolute and a relief valve opening pressure of 35 ± 5 kPa above standard atmospheric pressure. These are device-specific values and not general settings for other transformers. A PRD event then becomes one input to transformer alarm and condition assessment, as covered in the transformer alarm guide.

6. What to Check After a PRD Operates

PRD operation should be treated as an indication requiring investigation. It should not be treated as a reset-and-restart event. Checks usually include:

  • Transformer alarm history
  • Oil leakage or visible discharge
  • Tank condition
  • Уровень масла
  • Pressure indication
  • DGA results
  • Temperature history
  • Protection relay operation
  • Buchholz relay indication, where applicable
  • Evidence of an internal electrical or thermal fault

PRD operation alone cannot identify the root cause. Further steps should follow manufacturer procedures, site safety rules, protection records and diagnostic results, including анализ растворенных газов data.

7. PRD Selection and Monitoring Checklist

Specific settings come from the transformer manufacturer, the PRD manufacturer and the transformer mechanical design. The table lists items to confirm for a PRD and its monitoring interface.

Check Item Что необходимо подтвердить
Проектирование трансформаторов Sealed or conservator type, rating and intended duty
Tank Configuration Mounting position and available opening on the tank
PRD Type Reset or non-reset behavior, as specified by the manufacturer
Mechanical Indication Whether a visible operation indicator is provided
Alarm Contact Requirement Contact type and connection to the alarm or protection circuit
Operating Pressure Specification Value defined by the transformer and PRD manufacturers
Discharge Arrangement Safe routing of released oil or gas
Environmental Protection Ingress protection and outdoor suitability
Monitoring Interface Pressure sensor, RS485 or relay output for the monitoring system
Inspection Requirement Inspection interval and post-operation procedure

Pressure data from a PRD or sensor is most useful inside a wider мониторинг трансформатора architecture, where it can be compared with temperature, gas and alarm records.

8. Transformer PRD FAQ

8.1 What is a PRD in a transformer?

A transformer PRD is a pressure relief device fitted to an oil-immersed transformer. It opens when internal tank pressure exceeds its designed operating point, which helps relieve excessive pressure and reduces mechanical stress on the tank. Some designs also give mechanical indication or an alarm contact.

8.2 What causes a transformer pressure relief device to operate?

Abnormal internal pressure causes operation. Typical sources include rapid gas generation from a thermal or electrical fault, arcing or insulation breakdown. The PRD only responds to the pressure event and does not identify which fault produced it.

8.3 What is the difference between a PRD and a Buchholz relay?

A PRD relieves excessive internal pressure. A Buchholz relay detects gas accumulation and, depending on design, oil surge, then signals the protection circuit. The devices serve different functions and complement each other, so neither is a substitute for the other.

8.4 What should be checked after a transformer PRD operates?

Review alarm history, oil leakage, tank condition, oil level, pressure indication, DGA results, temperature history and protection relay operation. Check Buchholz relay indication where applicable. Follow manufacturer procedures and site safety rules before any decision to re-energize.
